Why do teeth discolour in the first place?

Teeth have two layers that affect their colour. The outer layer, enamel, is naturally white but picks up surface stains from things like coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco over time. Underneath that is dentine, which is naturally more yellow and becomes more visible as enamel thins with age.

So discolouration is usually a combination of surface staining and the natural ageing of the tooth structure. Both respond well to professional whitening.

What’s the difference between professional whitening and the supermarket stuff?

The active ingredient is the same — hydrogen peroxide — but the concentration is very different.

Over-the-counter products contain low levels of peroxide, which limits how much change they can achieve. Professional whitening uses a stronger formulation that’s applied safely in a controlled environment, which is why the results are so much more noticeable.

There’s also the question of fit. Generic whitening strips sit loosely against your teeth, which means uneven contact and uneven results. Custom trays made from a mould of your own teeth make proper contact across every surface.

How does laser whitening work?

At Fendalton Dental we use the Epic X Biolase Laser, which takes professional whitening a step further.

A hydrogen peroxide whitening gel is applied to the teeth, and then the laser is used to activate and accelerate it. The laser energy speeds up the chemical reaction, allowing the gel to penetrate the enamel more effectively and break down staining faster than gel alone.

The result is up to six shades whiter in a single appointment.

Does it hurt?

Most people are pleasantly surprised. The Epic X system is designed to minimise sensitivity, which is the main concern people have going in. Your gums and soft tissue are protected throughout the procedure, and Amy, our hygienist who carries out all whitening treatments, takes care to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

Some people notice mild sensitivity in the day or two after treatment. It settles quickly.

How long does it take?

One appointment, roughly an hour. That’s one of the real advantages of laser whitening over take-home treatments, which require consistent use over several weeks to build up results.

How long do the results last?

That depends largely on your habits. Avoiding heavy staining drinks, not smoking, and keeping up with regular hygiene appointments all help maintain the results. Most people find that with reasonable care, the effects last a year or more before any top-up is needed.

Is it suitable for everyone?

Whitening works best on natural teeth with surface or age-related staining. It won’t change the colour of crowns, veneers, or fillings, so if you have a lot of existing dental work in visible areas, that’s worth discussing before you start. It’s also not recommended during pregnancy or for children under 18.

Is it worth it?
